MOUNTAIN-TO-TOWN OUTSOLE
Engineered with a new, low profile, rubber tread that has the best of both worlds: ample traction on trails, AND excellent durability on pavement.

WIDE TOE BOX
We've re-designed the original Lems Last for a more active fit. This new sneaker features a foot-shaped toe box, paired with a slim heel fit.

RUGGED UPPER
The upper is made of durable materials that stand up to the abuses of trails, and also daily wear and tear.

LOW HEEL DROP
With 4mm of drop, compared to the traditional 12mm of drop, the Trailhead naturally decreases heel-striking for a more natural gait and healthier posture.

FIRM CUSHIONING
When your foot is on too soft of cushion, you end up with pain and discomfort. We've formulated a firm EVA midsole that'll keep your feet happy all day long.

THE TRAILHEAD - VERSION 2

Here are the features we’ve updated for the newest edition of the Trailhead.

WIDER TOEBOX: We widened the toebox on the updated Trailhead, giving more space to the toes (specifically the 4th and 5th) but kept it slimmer and sleeker than the toeboxes found in our origin series.
MORE FLEXIBILITY: We removed the 1.2mm TPU rock plate, after realizing that our rubber outsole provides enough stability and protection. The increased flexibility allows for a more efficient stride and better proprioceptive feel of the terrain.  Even with these changes, the Trailhead is still a great shoe for hiking.
BETTER HEEL FIT: The heel has been changed and adapted to create a more comfortable fit than the original Trailhead.
MIDSOLE AND OUTSOLE DENSITY: By decreasing the hardness of the EVA midsole and rubber by approximately 10%, we were able to increase the flexibility and create a more comfortable sole platform within the Trailhead.
DECREASED MIDSOLE ARCH THICKNESS: The arch area was dropped by 1.5mm, which lowered the effective drop of the shoe. This led to the 4mm drop feeling less raised than it previously did.
BUNION AREA OVERLAY REMOVED: We removed the overlay that wrapped around the first metatarsal, taking away the pressure point over this area, making the shoe feel wider in the ball of the foot.
TONGUE SHOELACE KEEPER SIMPLIFIED: To release some of the pressure at the top of the foot, we updated the lace keeper to a simpler structure.
ARCH BAND LINING REMOVED: We removed the additional lining material that wrapped the arch of the foot for a more comfortable fit in the instep area.
LOGO CHANGE: Last but not least, we updated the label on the tongue, to our new "LEMS" Mountain logo.

GREAT "MINIMAL INSPIRED" SHOE

I wear exclusively Lems for my casual and work shoes (Boulder Boot and Nine2Five), and I also own the Primal 2 so I like minimal shoes. However I really appreciate the effort Lems put into making a durable and affordable hiking shoe, even though it's immediately obvious that they are not truly minimal. I had been looking for a "minimal inspired" hiking shoe for some time. Thanks for taking the time to explain your design process as well.

I wear 45's in my other Lems shoes and the 11 Trailhead fit perfectly. The quality and durability is impressive for a new shoe design, especially one that is rather different than the other products. I really appreciate how rugged they are - it is always an option to go hiking in my nice all-leather Boulder Boot or Nine2Five but I believe that the rocks, roots and mud on the trail would have damaged the leather and I didn't want that. And frankly for hiking I wanted more support than the other Lems shoes provide, even if that meant wearing a different shoe style for a while. Although not truly minimal, the Trailhead shares several key principles and in my opinion it does it's job perfectly for a reasonable price.

RUGGED, COMFORTABLE, GOOD-LOOKING

I’ve been a Boulder Boot fan for years, and regularly wear Nine2Fives when I need to dress up a notch. I’ve also switched over to zero-drop for my running shoes so I was skeptical about Lems new footbed and 4mm drop on the Trailhead. But they won me over in just a couple days and now they’re my go-to shoe (even over the Boulder Boot!). For two main reasons:

First, I love the look. Lems seemed to realize that whatever they did with this shoe, it was never going to look sleek and minimal, so they embraced the size and shape. The retro-sneaker style doesn’t exactly hide the fact that these are rugged shoes, but it does make me feel like I can wear them in more situations.

And that’s the second reason: Versatility. The Trailhead bills itself as “mountain to town” shoe and it really is. The sole and construction have held up to some moderately heavy hikes since I bought my first pair a few months ago. I feel completely comfortable taking them on my upcoming backpacking trip. Since the Trailhead is a lowtop shoe, it doesn’t feel as heavy and clunky when you’re just running to the grocery store or stopping for a beer after a light hike.

Overall, the Trailhead is just a really great all-purpose shoe. It’s built well, can take a beating, and will look good at the end of the day.
